How to Cancel ZenBusiness Registered Agent Service (Without a Coverage Gap)

By Registered Agent Guides · Jul 18, 2026 · 7 min read

There is no cancel button for ZenBusiness registered agent service. Not in any state, not in any account configuration. ZenBusiness confirms this in its own help documentation: registered agent always requires contacting support, and support will confirm you have a replacement in place before they process anything.

That is not ZenBusiness being difficult. A registered agent carries live legal obligations recorded with your state, and they stay on the hook until the state record changes. But it does mean the order of operations decides whether this costs you one filing fee or another full year at $199/year.

The short version

  • Sign up with your replacement agent first.
  • File the change-of-agent form with your Secretary of State and wait for confirmation.
  • Then call ZenBusiness at 1-844-493-6249 to cancel.
  • Do not reverse those steps. There are no prorated refunds, and a coverage gap can cost you your good standing.

Why there is no self-service cancel

ZenBusiness does offer dashboard cancellation for some services, under Account Settings and Subscriptions, but only for customers in California, Colorado, Delaware, Hawaii, Illinois, New York, Tennessee, and DC. Those eight jurisdictions have laws requiring self-service cancellation for auto-renewing subscriptions.

Registered agent is excluded even there. ZenBusiness states that registered agent cannot be self-canceled in any state, regardless of where you live. So if you are in California and expecting the same one-click experience you get for other subscriptions, that is not how this one works.

Their reasoning is the legal exposure. While ZenBusiness is named as your agent on state records, they are responsible for receiving service of process on your behalf. They will not release that until the state says someone else has it.

The renewal clock you are working against

ZenBusiness registered agent runs $199/year with no renewal discount. Standalone customers pay $99 the first year and $199/year at every renewal after. If it came bundled in a Premium formation plan, it renews inside that plan.

Two clauses in their terms matter here.

No prorated refunds. Cancel two months into a paid year and you do not get the other ten months back. If your renewal has already processed, the practical move is to finish the term and time your switch to land before the next one.

Price increases apply by default. ZenBusiness can raise the fee for a new service term with 30 days notice. If you do not cancel before that term begins, their terms treat you as having accepted the new price. So a renewal notice showing a higher number is not an error, and ignoring it is agreement.

Start the switch at least three to four weeks before your renewal date. State processing on a change-of-agent filing typically runs one to four weeks, and you need it confirmed before you call.

What switching costs and saves

Standalone registered agent pricing, excluding formation bundles. State filing fees vary and some states charge nothing. Verified 2026.

ZenBusiness compared to Northwest and Harbor Compliance on registered agent pricing
Provider First year Renewal Three-year total
ZenBusiness $99 $199/year $497
Northwest $125 $125/year $375
Harbor Compliance $99 $149/year $397

The three-year gap between ZenBusiness and Northwest is $122, and it widens every year after because Northwest does not raise its rate at renewal. Add the one-time state filing fee, which runs $0 to $50 depending on your state, and most owners break even inside the first year.

How to cancel, step by step

1. Sign up with your replacement agent Do this before anything else. Your LLC must have a registered agent on file at all times, and the replacement needs a physical street address in your state. If you are switching to Northwest, they prepare and file the change-of-agent form for you in most states at no extra charge.
2. File the change-of-agent form with your state This is a state filing, not an account setting. Form names and fees differ by state. Our change-of-agent directory has the exact form, fee, and filing method for all 50 states, and our step-by-step guide covers the process.
3. Wait for the state to confirm One to four weeks in most states. Confirm the change is live by looking your LLC up in your Secretary of State business search and checking that the new agent is listed. Do not rely on an email receipt from the filing.
4. Call ZenBusiness to cancel 1-844-493-6249, or live chat at zenbusiness.com. Phone tends to resolve faster. Support will verify a replacement is on file before processing. Have your state confirmation ready, since ZenBusiness asks for proof their name has been removed from state records.
5. Check your other subscriptions Every ZenBusiness service is a separate subscription and each must be canceled independently. Worry Free Compliance, banking, domains, and website services keep billing after your registered agent is closed. Review Account Settings and Subscriptions before you hang up.

If you are in Maryland, read this first

Maryland has a rule that catches people trying to close an LLC rather than switch agents. If you are dissolving, the registered agent must sign the Dissolution and agree to continue serving as agent for one year after it is filed. That means you cannot cancel your agent and then dissolve. The agent has to still be in place to sign, and stays on the hook afterward. Plan the dissolution first and the cancellation last.

If registered agent came bundled with your formation plan

ZenBusiness includes registered agent in its Premium formation plan. If that is how you got it, canceling registered agent alone may not reduce your bill, because you are paying for the plan rather than the line item.

Ask support two questions before you cancel: what the plan costs without registered agent, and what else in the plan you are still using. Some owners find they are paying for a bundle to get one service they could buy standalone for less. Others find the bundle still makes sense and the right move is switching the agent while keeping the plan, which ZenBusiness allows.

Canceling a ZenBusiness service does not dissolve your LLC. Those are separate actions, and closing the account leaves the entity active and still subject to state filing requirements.

Common questions

Can I cancel ZenBusiness registered agent online? No. ZenBusiness states that registered agent cannot be self-canceled in any state. Dashboard cancellation exists for other services in eight jurisdictions, but registered agent always goes through support by phone or chat.

Will I get a refund for the unused part of my year? No. ZenBusiness does not issue prorated refunds for unused service periods. If your renewal already processed, time your switch for the end of the term rather than eating the loss.

What happens if I cancel before appointing a replacement? Support will not process it, which is the outcome protecting you. If you somehow ended up without an agent, your state can flag the LLC as not in good standing and eventually dissolve it administratively. Reinstatement costs far more than a year of agent fees. Our guide on reinstating a dissolved LLC covers that process if you are already there.

ZenBusiness raised my renewal price. Do I have to pay it? If you do not cancel before the new term starts, their terms treat you as having accepted the increase. They are required to give 30 days notice. Treat that notice as a deadline, not an announcement.

Do I need to tell my state I switched, or does ZenBusiness handle it? You do. The change-of-agent filing is yours to make, or your new agent makes it on your behalf. ZenBusiness cancellation does not update your state record, and support waits for that record to change before closing the service.

I have ZenBusiness as agent in several states. Can I cancel all at once? You file a change-of-agent form in each state separately, then cancel. There is no combined filing. If you are running agents across multiple states, our multi-state registered agent guide covers which providers make that manageable.

Bottom line

The whole thing is one state filing and one phone call, in that order. The mistakes that cost money are canceling first and creating a gap, or starting too close to a renewal date and getting billed for another year at $199/year with no refund available.

Give yourself three to four weeks before your renewal, get the state confirmation in hand, then call. And check your other ZenBusiness subscriptions while you are on the line, because they keep running independently.

Switching to: Northwest Registered Agent

$125/year flat with no renewal increase, all 50 states, and they prepare the change-of-agent filing for you in most states. That is $122 less than ZenBusiness over three years, and the gap grows after that.
