Search the business name register on the Massachusetts Secretary of State website before you file.
Massachusetts requires a Certificate of Existence from Idaho to prove your LLC is in good standing. The fee is $10. Available to order online. When Massachusetts is the destination for a foreign qualification, the home-state certificate must have been issued not more than 90 days before submission. The window is in the regulation, not on the form.
Order from Idaho ↗You must designate a registered agent with a physical address in Massachusetts to accept legal documents on behalf of your LLC. This is required as part of the foreign qualification application.
Submit your application along with the Certificate of Existence and the $500 filing fee. See the processing time under Ongoing compliance below. Expedited processing is available, priced under Ongoing compliance below.

The Application for Registration cannot be filed electronically in Massachusetts, and the charge is not available on a posted or hand delivered one, so a filer who wants it must fax. It is not optional on a fax filing. The Commonwealth scales this charge by the size of the filing fee rather than by speed, and the $500 registration lands on the $20 rung

Massachusetts carves 9 activities out by statute. On their own, none of them requires a foreign LLC to register.
Under M.G.L. c. 156D Section 15.01(c), which c. 156C Section 48 applies to foreign LLCs. Nine items; the numbering skips (7) and (8). There is no time limit on the isolated-transaction item and no indebtedness or debt-collection items. Subsection (b) provides that owning or leasing Massachusetts real estate, construction or repair work, and any activity requiring the performance of labor do constitute transacting business. Registration is due within ten days of starting business (c. 156C Section 48).
